Fellow Medical Students,
Something divine happened. Not in the theological sense, but in the politics kind of way that only an IA morning can deliver.
The MB2s (class of '29) walked into the exam hall, mentally reciting the passco answers they never understood. But behold, what did we see?
Pencils, and pencils everywhere.
And not just any pencils. These were aspirant-blessed, destiny-shaping pencils, courtesy of every UGMSA presidential hopeful within a 10-meter radius of the SBAHS hall.
They came bearing gifts, smiling like academic Santas.
“Would you like a pencil?”
“Oh no, take two!”
“Here’s one for the MCQs, one for your future, and two more in case the invigilator is looking at you in a funny way.”
By the time I entered the hall, I had four pencils in hand. FOUR. One for bubbling, one for erasing, one for backup, and one that was purely symbolic - the one I was chewing while I remember the answers to the Passco.
On behalf of every student who forgot their pencil, chewed theirs into dust, or mysteriously watched it vanish 10 minutes before the exam:
We thank you.
You didn't just hand out writing tools today.
You handed out hope.
You handed out preparedness.
You handed out a subtle reminder that you, too, are willing to campaign with strategy, grace, and lead graphite.
But Let’s Not Pretend, we know what’s up.
These pencils weren’t just for charity. They were symbolic endorsements with erasers attached.
Every time I shade an answer today, I could feel the silent campaign whispering through the pencil:
“Vote wisely.”
“Leadership starts with HB.”
But beyond the laughs and the strategic generosity, today reminded us of something deeper:
In the end, we are all just pencils, each trying to write our way through this beautifully frustrating med school journey.
Some of us break.
Some of us get sharpened by struggle.
Some of us still work, even when we’re short and tired and missing an eraser.
But we all write.
And we all matter.
So shoutout to every aspirant who remembered that sometimes, the smallest gesture: a pencil, can write the biggest impression.
For the remaining upcoming aspirants, we hope to see your pencils soon.
Pencil politics is real. Stay sharp.
Beautiful piece!
Beautiful piece!
Small act, big impact! The pencils may have been a small gesture, but the message is loud and clear: we're invested in your success.
A very nice piece, Teju
keep it coming, we’re here for it!!
