UGMSA's History - A legacy of Excellence

The University of Ghana Medical Students' Association (UGMSA) has a rich and storied history that spans over six decades. Founded in 1964, two years after the establishment of the University of Ghana Medical School, UGMSA has been the voice and backbone of medical students on campus. With a starting strength of 51 members, the association has witnessed an astronomical growth over the years currently having over 1,500 students in its active membership.

Our members come from diverse backgrounds across all parts of the world with unique cultures, enhancing the socio-cultural ecosystem and providing an enriching social experience for students. The association has had 3 female presidents over its six decades of existence with the recent addition being Ms. Adwoa Pinamang Owusu Afriyieh the president for the 2024/2025 administrative year. All these 3 women have one thing in common - unbridled courage and wherewithal, but there is a special tale that begs to be told about the latter’s rise to the highest office of the student body.

After emerging unsuccessful at her first bid, Ms. Pinamang would neither budge nor relent, she regrouped and run a massive campaign the following year. This campaign was dubbed the most effective and widely publicized one in the history of the association but it was not without its own legal tussles. However, the dream of yet another “Woman King” of UGMSA was realized!

As the umbrella organization for all medical students, UGMSA is committed to promoting the welfare, interests, and aspirations of its members. The association is led by an eight-member Executive Board, comprising:

  • The President
  • The Vice-President
  • The General Secretary
  • The Deputy General Secretary
  • The Organising Secretary
  • The Treasurer
  • The Health Officer
  • The Exchange Officer
These dedicated individuals, drawn from the 3rd to 6th year classes, serve for a one-year term, ensuring a dynamic and fresh leadership.
